Spousal violence is a uniquely common and dangerous form of violence. There has been
a recent surge in the development of risk assessment instruments in this field, but there exist few instruments to support efforts to formulate and manage risk, and ultimately prevent spousal violence.
This workshop will prepare participants to administer two structured professional judgement (SPJ) instruments designed for use with spousal assaulters. The first is the Brief Spousal Assault Form for the Evaluation of Risk (B-SAFER), a screening measure designed for use in situations where limited time is available for risk assessment.
The second instrument, the Spousal Assault Risk Assessment Guide (SARA), is a wellvalidated and comprehensive tool designed to assist practitioners in case management. These instruments do not use actuarial or statistical methods to support decision-making about risk, but instead offer guidelines for collecting relevant information and making structured decisions. This workshop will review the content and the administration of the instruments and discuss the special problem of risk for femicide and homicide in these cases.
Case studies will be presented to allow those attending to apply the instruments in their own work with confidence. It is expected that the workshop will appeal to those working in mental health, law enforcement, and corrections settings, as well as to those who work specifically with victims of spousal violence.
