Stalking has long been a problem in our society but it has only recently been recognized as a criminal offence. This workshop will provide an overview of stalking and threatening behaviours and introduce participants to techniques designed to manage those behaviours.
It will begin with a discussion of the common characteristics and typologies of stalkers and their victims. Participants will then be trained to apply the most recent and comprehensive version of the Guidelines for Stalking Assessment and Management (SAM; published in 2008), a structured professional judgement approach to managing stalkers. Dr. Reid Meloy, one of the field’s foremost authorities on stalking, has described the SAM as "... an exemplary instrument – and the first of its kind – to risk manage a stalking case and its inherent violence."
The workshop will include lecture and audio-visual materials, handouts, and case studies to provide practice in risk assessment. It is expected that the workshop will appeal to those working in mental health, law enforcement, and corrections settings, as well as to those who work specifically with stalking and spousal violence victims.
