From Risk Assessment to Treatment

Facilitator: Dr Gill Attrill (UK)

As clinicians we have a responsibility to balance risk assessment with opportunities for change. This workshop aims to develop competence and confidence in designing effective, evidence based treatment. It covers development of group, individual and holistic treatment approaches and encourages participants to adapt learning to their own client group and context. Interactive and practical, the emphasis will be on good practice guidance and developing programme design skills and expertise. Sessions will include a review of frameworks and principles which underpin effective treatment and will culminate in participants designing their own models of change. Whilst emphasis will be on developing coherent, well structured and evidenced based treatment this will be balanced with a focus on developing innovative and flexible approaches which are likely to inspire and maintain change. Included in the workshop will be input on transforming risk factors into treatment targets, identifying effective treatment methodologies and how to pace, sequence and reinforce skills acquisition and learning. The workshop will also cover best practice and tips for developing treatment materials and handouts, and manualising programme information without losing creativity and flexibility. There will be a focus on creating responsive and individualised approaches, even when in a group setting or when treatment is delivered to scale and across location. The course will also consider how to measure and report on change and how to integrate treatment into broader progression strategies. As well as design the course will consider delivery issues including techniques for monitoring and maintaining integrity and ensuring continuity and generalisation of treatment beyond the treatment setting.
