Advanced Issues in the Assessment of Psychopathic Personality Disorder

This course is intended to further develop the expertise of people who are already trained and experienced in the assessment and management of psychopathic personality disorder (PPD). The primary goal is to help forensic clinicians understand and address the limitations of popular assessment procedures such as the PCL-R /PCL:SV.

The following topics will be covered:

  • strategic interviewing;
  • limitations of current diagnostic criteria for PPD
  • enhancing reliability
  • assessing change in PPD;
  • evaluating the functional and legal relevance of PPD with respect to violence risk
  • assessing PPD in the presence of acute mental disorder
  • brief introduction to the Comprehensive Assessment of Psychopathic Personality (CAPP)

Methods of instruction will include lecture, completion of a video practice case, role playing, and group discussion. Attendees should have prior training or experience in the use of the PCL-R or PCL:SV.
